Katana | Kashū-jū Fujiwara Iehira | NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon
Forged in 1673 (Kanbun 13) by Kashū-jū Fujiwara Iehira, this elegant katana is a fine representative of the prestigious Kaga tradition. Iehira served the powerful Maeda Clan of Kaga Domain as an official swordsmith, producing blades renowned for their refined workmanship and brilliant tempering.
Born as the son of the first-generation master Ietada, Iehira succeeded the family tradition after the early passing of his elder brother and became the second-generation head of the school. Together with his father, he is regarded as one of the greatest swordsmiths of Kaga Province, and is widely recognized for possessing some of the highest technical skill among all Kaga smiths.
This sword immediately captivates with its exceptionally beautiful Kaeruko Chōji (frog-spawn clove) hamon, one of Iehira's signature styles. The temper pattern is remarkably well matched on both sides of the blade—an indication of a highly skilled craftsman with outstanding control during yaki-ire. Within the lively chōji are abundant sunagashi (flowing nie lines) and kinsuji (bright lightning-like martensite streaks), creating a vivid, luminous appearance that continuously reveals new details as the blade catches the light.
This example is considered an especially fine work by Iehira. The brilliant hamon is exceptionally bright and well-defined, with perfectly balanced activity on both sides of the blade—an achievement rarely seen and highly appreciated by experienced collectors.
The blade remains in its original ubu nakago, preserving its full signature and historical integrity. Combined with its graceful Kanbun-era proportions, this is a sword that perfectly balances elegance with the restrained sophistication for which early Edo masterpieces are admired.
Accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Worthy of Preservation) Certificate, this katana represents one of the finest surviving works by Iehira and is an outstanding choice for collectors seeking a museum-quality Kaga blade with exceptional artistic activity in the hamon.
Koshirae Ornate Mouting
The sword is mounted in an elegant black lacquered koshirae featuring a finely textured carved lacquer finish. The mountings are tastefully coordinated with a graceful mokkō-shaped tsuba decorated with flowing bird motifs, while the dark brown silk tsuka-ito complements the antique samegawa beautifully. The dignified koshirae harmonizes perfectly with the refined character of the blade, resulting in an exceptionally balanced presentation worthy of a distinguished Edo-period masterpiece.
The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Tokubetsu Hozon Paper (Extremely Well-preserved sword)
BLADE:Registration Certificate (Torokusho): #Hyogo-15071
*Every authentic antique Japanese sword legally possessed in Japan must be accompanied by an official Japanese Sword Registration Certificate (Torokusho) issued by the Prefectural Board of Education. Possessing an antique sword without this certificate is illegal under Japanese law.
For collectors, the Torokusho also serves as official evidence that the blade has been examined and recognized by the Japanese authorities as a genuine Japanese sword rather than a modern replica or imitation.
Please note that this registration certificate is valid only within Japan. Once the sword is permanently exported, the original certificate is legally required to be returned to the issuing Prefectural Board of Education and therefore cannot accompany the sword overseas.
