Export Procedures for Antique Swords & Armor

Japan is home to one of the world's most important traditions of arms and armor craftsmanship. In order to preserve this cultural heritage, the export of antique Japanese swords, samurai armor, and other historical works of art is regulated by the Japanese government.

Before an antique sword or armor may be permanently exported from Japan, it must first be examined by the Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō) and issued an official Antique Art Export Inspection Certificate. This review confirms that the object is not designated as a National Treasure, Important Cultural Property, or any other protected cultural asset whose export is restricted under Japanese law.

Accordingly, most antique swords and armors purchased in Japan cannot be removed from the country immediately after purchase. Unlike ordinary retail goods, these historically significant objects require government clearance before export can proceed.

The inspection and certification process currently requires approximately 4–8 weeks, with an average processing time of around six weeks. For antique Japanese swords, additional legal procedures are also required, including the surrender of the sword's Japanese registration certificate prior to export approval.

Please note that a limited number of items in our collection have already completed the export inspection process and possess a valid Export Inspection Certificate. Such pieces may be eligible for immediate delivery or same-day carry-out, subject to the import regulations of the destination country.
