Katana by Yokoyama Kaga no Suke Fujiwara Sukenaga – Signed by Sukehisa
Yokoyama Kaga no Suke Fujiwara Sukenaga was one of the most celebrated swordsmiths of the late Edo period and a leading master of the prestigious Bizen Osafune tradition. Widely regarded as one of the finest Bizen smiths of the Shinshintō (New-New Sword) period, Sukenaga brought the magnificent artistry of classical Bizen swordmaking back to life during the final decades of the samurai era.
Sukenaga's greatest artistic achievement lies in his exceptionally beautiful and elaborate hamon, particularly the Jūka-chōji Midare (overlapping clove pattern) and Kikka-chōji (chrysanthemum-shaped clove pattern). These distinctive temper lines feature intricate clusters of overlapping chōji formations, resembling blossoming chrysanthemums and clove flowers. Their extraordinary complexity, elegance, and rhythmic beauty make Sukenaga's finest blades immediately recognizable to knowledgeable collectors.
This particular katana displays the characteristic Jūka-chōji Midare hamon, beautifully demonstrating the refined craftsmanship and distinctive aesthetic for which Sukenaga is renowned.
A Rare Father-and-Son Collaboration
An especially noteworthy feature of this sword is its inscription, which the NBTHK identifies as "Sukehisa Daimei" (祐久代銘).
Sukehisa was Sukenaga's son and successor, who later inherited the name of the second-generation Sukenaga. The term Daimei indicates that Sukehisa inscribed the signature on behalf of his father.
This attribution provides a fascinating connection between two generations of the distinguished Yokoyama swordmaking family. It also suggests Sukehisa's involvement in his father's workshop and makes the sword particularly interesting from both historical and scholarly perspectives.
Rather than being simply another signed work of Sukenaga, this katana preserves tangible evidence of the relationship between master and successor within the celebrated Osafune tradition.
Certification and Collectible Significance
The sword is accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token certificate, issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. This prestigious certification recognizes the blade's historical and artistic significance and confirms its attribution, including the Sukehisa Daimei inscription.
With its original unshortened tang, spectacular Jūka-chōji Midare hamon, and historically significant father-and-son connection, this katana represents an outstanding example of late Edo-period Bizen swordmaking.
A particularly desirable piece for collectors of Shinshintō masterpieces, the Yokoyama school, and the distinguished lineage of Bizen Osafune swordsmiths.
The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Tokubetsu Hozon Paper (Extremely Well-preserved sword)
BLADE:Registration Certificate (Torokusho): #Hyogo-15071
*Every authentic antique Japanese sword legally possessed in Japan must be accompanied by an official Japanese Sword Registration Certificate (Torokusho) issued by the Prefectural Board of Education. Possessing an antique sword without this certificate is illegal under Japanese law.
For collectors, the Torokusho also serves as official evidence that the blade has been examined and recognized by the Japanese authorities as a genuine Japanese sword rather than a modern replica or imitation.
Please note that this registration certificate is valid only within Japan. Once the sword is permanently exported, the original certificate is legally required to be returned to the issuing Prefectural Board of Education and therefore cannot accompany the sword overseas.
